Outer-Island Fair in Naha

For those of you on mainland Okinawa who just can’t seem to make your way out to Zamami, this weekend the outer-islands will be coming to you.  The 2014 Rito (outer-island) Fair will take place at Okinawa Cellular Park Naha in Onoyama Park.  Conveniently located along the modern wonder that is the Yui Monorail (Onoyama Park Station,) the Rito Fair provides those living on and visiting mainland Okinawa with a means to experience all of the prefecture’s beautiful outer islands without setting foot on a boat or a plane.

Since 2002, the Okinawa Prefectural Government has held the Rito Fair in order to bridge the gap between urban life and the slower pace of life among nature still found on Okinawa’s outer islands.  What this means for you visitors is a whole bunch of free events, performances, food, and entertainment.  Eighteen outer-island municipalities, including cities, towns and villages, will be represented at the fair.  Each municipality will provide local specialty products for display and sale.  Additionally, presenters will put on traditional arts performances featuring distinct regional variations of Okinawan culture.  There will be a large food-court corner, mascot and character show, and a raffle.
